What to Actually Pack for Nosara (and What You Can Leave at Home)
Packing for Nosara can feel a little confusing if you have never visited Guanacaste before. Should you bring hiking gear? Fancy outfits? A pharmacy’s worth of medicine? Three pairs of shoes or ten?
The good news is that you probably need less than you think.
While this guide is written with Nosara in mind, many of these tips apply throughout Guanacaste as well. Here is what to actually pack, what you can buy locally, and a few things visitors often forget.
The Essentials
Bug Spray and Sunscreen
If there are two things we strongly recommend bringing, it is bug spray and sunscreen.
You can buy both in Nosara, but they are often more expensive than what you may pay at home.
Mosquitoes tend to be more noticeable during rainy season, so bug spray can make a big difference in your comfort level.
And the Guanacaste sun does not play around. A good sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat can go a long way toward keeping your vacation enjoyable.
If you know you burn easily, consider packing aloe or aloe spray as well. You can also find aloe products locally—or even fresh aloe.
Reusable Water Bottle
Bring a reusable water bottle.
Tap water is drinkable in most of Nosara and many visitors choose to refill bottles throughout their stay. Some rentals also provide larger water jugs, which can save money and reduce plastic waste compared with buying lots of individual bottles.
Prescription Medications and Everyday Basics
If you take prescription medications, bring enough for your trip.
We also recommend packing any medications you use frequently, such as antacids, allergy medicine or pain relievers.
That said, you do not need to pack a wilderness survival kit.
Nosara has multiple pharmacies and doctors available if needed, and most everyday essentials can be found locally.
Chargers and Electronics
Good news: standard U.S. plugs work in Costa Rica.
Bring your normal phone chargers and device chargers, and consider a portable battery pack if you plan on spending long days exploring or taking tours.
Dress for Nosara
Nosara is casual, outdoorsy and beach-oriented.
Think lightweight clothing, sandals and clothes you do not mind getting dusty or sandy.
Nosara is more beach bags and dusty roads than dress shoes and polished outfits. If this is your first visit, our article What to Expect in Nosaracan help paint a clearer picture of daily life, road conditions and the overall vibe.
Lightweight Clothing Is Your Friend
Pack light, breathable clothing.
Guanacaste is always hot, and heavy fabrics or lots of layers can quickly become uncomfortable.
Many visitors find themselves wearing the same favorite lightweight outfits repeatedly.
Rainy Season Reality
If you are visiting during rainy season, bring:
a compact umbrella
poncho or lightweight rain jacket
dry bag or waterproof phone pouch
These can be especially helpful during tours or afternoon showers. If you are unsure what rainy season is actually like here, check out Rainy Season in Nosara: What to Actually Expect—many visitors are surprised by how green and enjoyable this time of year can be.
Multiple swimsuits are also a smart move during rainy season, since things may take longer to dry.
Dry Season Tip: Bring a Bandana
This is one that surprises people.
If you are visiting during dry season and planning on walking, touring or riding ATVs, a simple bandana can be surprisingly useful for dust.
Shoes Matter More Than You Think
Comfortable sandals like Tevas or Chacos are often a great choice if you will be walking a lot.
Flip flops are perfect for certain situations—but during rainy season they can become muddy quickly and usually launch mud directly onto your entire backside.
If you plan on hiking, bicycling, skateboarding or doing active tours, pack sneakers and socks as well.
And before overpacking clothes, check whether your rental has a washer and dryer available. Choosing the right area and rental setup can make a bigger difference than people expect. Our guide Where to Stay in Nosara (So You Don’t Book the Wrong Area) may help if you are still deciding.
If not, do not panic. Laundry services and laundromats are available locally and can make packing much easier.
Tour and Adventure Packing
Different activities may require different gear, so it helps to think ahead. If you are still planning your itinerary, our guides What to Do in Nosara, Common Trip Mistakes in Costa Rica, and What to Expect in Nosara can help you decide what adventures—and what packing choices—make the most sense for your trip.
Surfing
If surfing is on your list, bring a T-shirt or rash guard that covers your torso.
Many visitors learn quickly that belly rash from surfing is not the souvenir they were hoping to bring home.
Horseback Riding and Ziplining
Closed-toe shoes are typically required for ziplining and horseback riding.
Long pants can also make horseback tours much more comfortable.
Rain and Water Activities
If you are visiting during rainy season—or simply plan on spending time near water—a dry bag or waterproof phone case can be extremely helpful.
It is much easier to enjoy a tour when you are not worrying about your phone.
Beach Bags and Daypacks
Bring some sort of beach tote, backpack or small day bag.
Think about how you will be getting around and what you may need to carry. Transportation can also shape what makes sense to bring. If you are deciding how to get around, read Do You Need a Car or ATV in Nosara? (What to Rent + What to Skip).
A lightweight backpack works well for tours, while a larger tote is often helpful for beach days.
Yoga and Wellness
Planning on taking a yoga class?
Do not forget comfortable yoga clothing. Nosara has a strong wellness and yoga community and many visitors enjoy adding classes to their trip.
Cash, Cards and Practical Stuff
Most businesses in Nosara accept credit cards and many also accept U.S. dollars.
Still, it is worth checking ahead if any tours or activities require cash payment.
If you need cash, ATMs are available locally.
Just remember to notify your bank before traveling so your cards work smoothly abroad. Still figuring out arrival logistics? Our guideLiberia Airport to Nosara: What to Actually Expect covers drive times, road conditions and transportation options.
Traveling With Kids? Here Are a Few Extras
Traveling with little ones to Nosara can be wonderful—and a little planning helps. If you are planning a family vacation, you may also enjoy What to Do in Nosara With Kids for family-friendly ideas and local tips.
Snacks and Familiar Foods
Nosara has grocery stores and plenty of food options.
However, if your child is especially picky or depends on certain brands, you may want to bring those from home.
The same goes for formula. Brands and availability can vary.
Baby Essentials
Helpful items may include:
swim diapers
baby sunscreen
baby-safe bug spray
sun hats
inflatable pool or beach floats
anti-nausea medicine if your child gets carsick
The drive between Liberia and Nosara is beautiful, but winding roads can affect some children(and adults).
Strollers and Shade
Nosara is not the world’s most stroller-friendly destination.
There are limited sidewalks in many areas, and dirt roads and potholes can make stroller use unpredictable.
They can still be very useful for airports and certain locations—just do not expect to rely on them everywhere.
If you have little ones, portable beach shade can also be incredibly helpful. The beaches have some shady areas, but depending on the tide it can be pretty far from the water.
The good news? You do not need to bring every baby item you own.
Cribs, pack-and-plays, strollers, bouncy chairs and other baby gear can often be rented locally.
What You Don’t Need to Stress About
You do not need to arrive in Nosara prepared for total wilderness survival.
There are pharmacies, doctors, grocery stores, laundry services and plenty of essentials available if needed.
Pack thoughtfully—but do not overthink it.
The best trips usually involve a little flexibility, a sense of adventure and room in your suitcase for the unexpected.
