Where to Stay in Nosara (So You Don’t Book the Wrong Area)

beautiful view overlooking beach in the jungle

Planning where to stay in Nosara can be confusing — mostly because “Nosara” can mean a lot of different things.

Two places might both say “Nosara” but have completely different experiences — one walkable to the beach and restaurants, and another where you’ll need to drive everywhere.

This is one of the easiest parts of a Nosara trip to get wrong—and it can completely change your experience once you’re here.

Quick Summary (If You Don’t Want to Overthink It)

  • If you want to be able to walk to the beach, restaurants, and shops → look in Playa Guiones

  • If you want something a little quieter but still close → Playa Pelada

  • If you’re okay driving everywhere → you’ll have more flexibility with location

  • If a listing just says “Nosara” → always check the exact map location

Playa Guiones

This is where most people picture when they think of Nosara.

It has the highest concentration of restaurants, cafes, shops, and things to do — all spread along a few main roads that lead directly to the beach.

The beach here is also one of the most swimmable in the area.

There are two main “zones”:

  • The main strip (more daytime activity, shops, Tuesday market)

  • The northern strip (more restaurants open at night, lively dinner scene)

Everything is relatively close together, and many places are within walking or biking distance.

Good to know:

  • Most accommodations are on roads that lead straight to the beach

  • Some are located across the main road (like Las Huacas), which may require driving

  • There are small mini markets, but they’re more expensive than the main grocery stores in town

Restaurants in this area include:
Howler’s, La Brasa, Al Chile, Satori, Beach Dog, and Pacifico Azul — along with many smaller cafes and local spots spread throughout the area. See our full guide to the best restaurants in Nosara.

Well-known accomodations:
Olas Verdes, The Gilded Iguana, Harmony Hotel, Sendero, Sunset Shack

Playa Pelada

Pelada has a different feel — a bit quieter and more spread out, but still close to everything.

The beach is beautiful, with more rocks and tide variation, so it’s not always as swimmable as Guiones depending on conditions.

There are fewer restaurants, but some well-known spots are here.

Good to know:

  • Some places are very close to the beach, while others involve a longer walk due to hills and winding roads

  • It’s a little less “central,” but still very accessible

  • You may want a car depending on where you stay

Restaurants in this area include:
El Chivo, La Luna, Olga’s, Sunrise Cafe, Il Pepperoni

Well-known accommodations:
Lagarta Lodge, Nosara Beach Hotel

“Nosara” (What That Actually Means)

This is where people get tripped up. “Nosara” can refer to the entire region — not just the beach areas.

So if a listing says “Nosara,” it could be:

  • close to the beach

  • 10–15 minutes away

  • or even further

Always check the map location. If being able to walk to restaurants or the beach is important to you, don’t rely on the listing title — confirm the exact location.

Esperanza

Esperanza is located just inland from Guiones.

It’s relatively close in distance, but you’ll need to drive to get to the beach, restaurants, and most activities.

There are some well-known condo-style developments here.

Restaurants in this area include:
Il Basilico, Mama Gui, Almendro’s

Well-known accomodations:
Become, 506 Tennis Center

This area can work well if you’re comfortable having transportation and don’t mind going back and forth.

A Few Important Things to Know Overall

  • Walkability varies more than people expect — always confirm distance if it matters to you

  • Mini markets near the beach are convenient but more expensive

  • For larger grocery stores and gas → you’ll need to go into town (“Nosara town”)

  • There is one pharmacy and two medical clinics in Guiones, but most services are in town

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Booking something labeled “Nosara” without checking the map

  • Assuming everything is walkable

  • Not thinking about how often you’ll need to go back and forth (beach, groceries, restaurants, etc.)

  • Choosing a place based only on photos without understanding location

What to Check Before You Book

A place can look amazing online, but the details matter more than people expect.

Essentials:

  • Walkability to beach or restaurants

  • AC (only bedrooms vs entire house)

  • Kitchen setup (some don’t have full ovens or full-size fridges)

Comfort:

  • Pool

  • Washer/dryer (very helpful for longer stays)

  • TV (many places don’t have one)

Logistics:

  • Parking setup (gated or not)

  • Shared vs private spaces

  • Security (some places have night guards)

If You’re Traveling with Kids

A few extra things to think about:

  • Getting everyone to the beach (walking vs driving)

  • Pool safety

  • Stairs, railings, and open layouts

  • How easy it is to get to food, snacks, and essentials

Do I need a car if I stay in Nosara?
If you stay in a walkable part of Guiones, you may not need one. In Pelada or other areas, having a car or ATV is usually more helpful.

Is everything in Nosara walkable?
No — this is a common misconception. Some areas are very walkable, while others require driving. Always check the exact location before booking.

What does “Nosara” mean on Airbnb listings?
It can refer to the entire region, not just the beach areas. Always check the map location to understand how close you are to restaurants, shops, and the beach.
