Playa Pelada vs Playa Guiones: Which Area Should You Stay In?
If you're planning a trip to Nosara, one of the biggest decisions you'll make is whether to stay in Playa Guiones or Playa Pelada. The good news? You really can't go wrong. The two neighborhoods sit right next to each other and are only a few minutes apart by car. That said, they offer very different experiences. Here's what you should know before booking.
What Playa Guiones and Playa Pelada Have in Common
Both neighborhoods are part of the Ostional Wildlife Refuge, which means there are very few buildings directly on the beach. Even properties advertised as "beachfront" usually sit behind a protected strip of vegetation, with a short trail leading down to the sand.
Both areas also have mini supermarkets where you can pick up essentials, although Guiones offers a much larger selection of shops and services.
Depending on where you stay, you may be able to walk to the beach, restaurants, and stores. However, don't assume that every property in either area is walkable. Location matters a lot.
Stay in Guiones If You Want Convenience
For most first-time visitors, Guiones is the easiest choice.
This is the heart of Nosara's tourism scene, with the largest concentration of restaurants, cafes, shops, surf schools, and wellness studios. If you plan to spend your vacation walking or biking rather than renting a vehicle, Guiones is usually the better option.

Guiones is also Nosara's main surfing beach. Nearly all surf lessons take place here, and you'll find hundreds of surfers in the water throughout the day. The long sandy beach offers plenty of space and consistent waves for beginners and experienced surfers alike.
Guiones may be the better fit if:
You don't plan to rent a car, ATV, or golf cart
Surfing is a major part of your trip
You want lots of restaurant options nearby
You enjoy being close to the action
Stay in Pelada If You Want a Quieter Experience
Playa Pelada offers a more residential and laid-back atmosphere.
While you'll still find several excellent restaurants, there are fewer businesses overall and much less nightlife. Many visitors choose Pelada because it feels quieter and more relaxed while still being only a few minutes from Guiones.
The beach itself is also quite different. Rather than one long stretch of sand, Pelada features rocky areas, tide pools, scenic viewpoints, and unique formations where seawater shoots through rocks during certain tides. It also has a couple of beachfront restaurants, something that is rare in Nosara due to wildlife refuge restrictions.
Pelada may be the better fit if:
You prefer a quieter environment
You want a more residential feel
You're planning a family vacation
You enjoy exploring tide pools and rocky shoreline features
Don't Judge by the Neighborhood Name Alone
One of the biggest mistakes visitors make is assuming that every property in Guiones or Pelada is equally walkable.
For example, Lagarta Lodge is considered part of the Pelada area, but it sits on top of a large hill overlooking the ocean. The views are incredible, but walking to and from the beach can be challenging.
Similarly, neighborhoods such as Las Huacas and Las Huacitas are often grouped under Guiones, but they are located across the main road and up steep hills. While they're only a short drive from the beach, most visitors would not consider them walkable to restaurants and surf lessons.
Before booking, it's always worth checking the property's exact location on Google Maps and measuring the distance to the places you expect to visit regularly.
What About Golf Carts?
Golf carts tend to be most convenient in central Guiones.
If you're staying in Pelada, you'll likely find yourself using the main road more often to reach restaurants, shops, and activities. Some Pelada roads can also be rougher or steeper depending on the location.
