What to Do in Nosara with Kids (Real Tips from Locals)

Planning a trip to Nosara with kids can feel a little overwhelming — especially since there isn’t a lot of clear, up-to-date information out there.

Some activities sound great online but are exhausting (or even unsafe) with kids, while others are way easier and more fun than you’d expect.

We live here in Nosara, and this guide is meant to help you quickly figure out what’s actually worth doing with kids — based on age, effort level, and real-life experience.

EASY, LOW-EFFORT THINGS TO DO WITH KIDS

If you’re looking for simple, low-planning activities, there are plenty of options that work really well with kids.

The beach is the obvious one — and for good reason. Just be aware that the ocean here can be powerful. Always pay attention to the lifeguard flags, stay near lifeguard towers, and be extra cautious with kids (and honestly, adults too).

A simple but helpful tip: bring a large jug of water in your car so you can rinse everyone off in the parking lot before heading home.

The skatepark is another easy option. It’s open daily from 7am to 9pm and free to use. You can bring your own skateboard or rent one locally.

Surfing is also very accessible for families. You can book family lessons or just lessons for the kids, and it’s a really fun way to spend a morning together.

You’ll also find plenty of casual, open-air restaurants where kids can move around a bit and meals are quick and easy — which makes a big difference after a long day.

BEST TOURS & ACTIVITIES FOR KIDS

If you’re looking to book something a little more structured, here are some of the best options depending on your child’s age.

For younger kids (around 4–7):

Zipline tours are a great option once kids are old enough (5+). They’re exciting but still very safe and well-organized.

River splashing ATV tours are one of the most fun and easiest adventure-style activities. They’re shorter than most ATV tours and don’t require as much physical effort or focus, which makes them ideal for kids.

For older kids (around 8+):

Waterfall tours(as part of an ATV tour or not) become a great option, especially for kids who are comfortable walking, climbing a bit, and spending time outdoors.

Coffee farm ATV tours are more on the cultural side, so whether kids enjoy them really depends on their personality and attention span.

If you're interested in booking any of these, we can help connect you with reliable local operators and make the process easy.

WHEN YOU NEED A BREAK (Childcare & Kids Programs)

If you’re staying in Nosara for more than a few days, having some childcare options can make a huge difference — whether you want a little time to relax or just need something structured for the kids.

KIDS CLUBS & DAY PROGRAMS

These are great if your child enjoys being around other kids and having a mix of structured activities.

Nosara Day Camp is one of the most popular options in the area. It’s especially loved because the kids don’t just stay in one place — they do a variety of activities and field trips, which keeps things fun and engaging.

The kids club at The Gilded Iguana is another well-known option, offering half-day sessions for children ages 4 to 10 throughout the week. It’s a convenient choice, especially for families staying at the hotel, but it’s also open to outside guests depending on availability. They also host additional kid-friendly activities like movie nights and special events from time to time. Pricing is typically around $45–80 for a half-day depending on whether you’re a hotel guest or visiting from outside (as of March 2026).

There are also smaller daycare and Waldorf-style options in the area.

PRIVATE NANNIES & BABYSITTERS

If you prefer something more flexible, there are also reputable companies in Nosara that offer hourly childcare in your home or vacation rental.

This is a great option if:

  • You have younger children or babies

  • You want to keep your child in a familiar environment

  • You need coverage for evenings or irregular hours

THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

A few small things can make a big difference when traveling here with kids.

  • Bring sunscreen from home — it’s very expensive locally, and the sun is extremely strong since you’re close to the equator.

  • The same goes for bug spray, which can also be pricey and is something you’ll definitely want.

  • At the beach, always pay attention to the flag system and stay in safer areas. Conditions can change quickly, and the ocean here is not something to underestimate.

  • Your form of transport in Nosara can make a big difference when traveling with kids (you can read more about transportation options here).

  • Plan for a slower pace than you might expect. Getting around can take longer, and kids will naturally need more breaks — which is part of the experience here.

🩺 Medical Care & Baby Essentials

If you're traveling with kids (especially babies), you might feel a little nervous about medical care and supplies.

The good news is that Nosara is well set up for this.

There are several pharmacies in town where you can find most medications and essentials. You’ll also find diapers, formula, baby food, snacks, and toys at local stores. There are well-equipped medical clinics in town, including one that can coordinate emergency transport if needed. The nearest full hospital is about 1.5 hours away.

There are also doctors who can come to your home or rental, which can be incredibly helpful when traveling with kids.

UNIQUE EXPERIENCES (WORTH PLANNING AROUND)

Turtle tours in Ostional are one of the most unique things you can do. If you happen to be here during an arribada (mass nesting event), it’s an unforgettable experience. Even outside of that, there are opportunities to see hatchlings depending on the time of year. It’s about a 30-minute drive from Nosara and definitely worth considering if you’re interested in wildlife.

Horseback riding is another great family-friendly activity, and sunset tours are especially memorable.

EASY PLACES TO EAT WITH KIDS

You don’t need to overthink meals here, but it helps to know what to expect.

  • Il Pepperoni - Big open-air space with a relaxed vibe. Great for breakfast (multiple options like bakery, smoothies, and traditional Costa Rican food), and a wide menu for lunch and dinner.

  • El Chivo - Fun, casual spot with Mexican/American food. Good drinks, lively atmosphere, and plenty of space for kids to move around.

  • Il Basilico - Great pizza and Italian food, plus a small playground area outside.

  • Rancho Tico - Local favorite with Costa Rican food and plenty of space. Sometimes has a small kids’ play area.

  • Chancho’s BBQ - Super casual, quick service, and great food close to the beach.

  • Yu Slow Food - Small spot with amazing Asian food, located in a plaza with a large playground and open space for kids.
