The first 1.5 hours of the drive are generally very straightforward.
The roads are paved, there are plenty of gas stations and places to stop, and most visitors are surprised that this part feels much more normal than they expected.
The biggest variable is the final stretch between Sámara and Nosara.
That last hour is mostly dirt road and conditions change constantly depending on rain and road repairs. Some days it’s relatively smooth. Other days it can be extremely bumpy with potholes.
If you’re prone to motion sickness, sensitive to rough roads, hungry, tired, or arriving already stressed… this is usually the part that gets people a little grumpy.
That said, thousands of visitors make the drive every month without problems.
Should You Rent a Car at Liberia Airport?
For many visitors, yes.
Renting directly at Liberia Airport is pretty easy. After landing, the rental companies shuttle you a short distance to their office and you head out from there.
If you’re arriving during daylight hours and generally feel comfortable driving somewhere unfamiliar, most people do completely fine driving themselves.
You do NOT need a 4x4 for a normal Nosara trip, especially if you’re staying around Guiones or Pelada.
That said, a 4x4 gives you more flexibility and peace of mind during rainy season or if you plan to explore more remote areas.
If you’re also renting an ATV or side-by-side once you arrive in Nosara, then the type of rental car matters even less.

When a Shuttle Might Be Better
Some visitors genuinely prefer taking a private shuttle from Liberia to Nosara instead — especially after a long travel day.

Driving in Nosara is… different
Once you arrive, things slow down a bit.
There are lots of motorcycles, varying levels of road-rule interpretation, pedestrians, bikes, potholes, and dust depending on the season.
Drive slower than you think you need to and you’ll usually be completely fine.

This really depends on the person.
Plenty of visitors arrive and drive to Nosara after dark without issues.
But if driving unfamiliar roads at night sounds stressful to you, it’s worth considering taking a shuttle or finding an earlier flight.
